Beauty in the Broken Places

Allison Pataki, author of The Traitor’s Wife, The Accidental Empress and Sisi wrote this deeply moving memoir about how a stroke in her 30 year old, otherwise healthy husband changed their lives forever.

Allison and David met in college and knew immediately that they were meant to be together. He was studying to be a doctor, she a writer. As his career progressed they married. When she was five months pregnant, Allison’s David suffered a rare and life-threatening stroke. In Fargo, ND, alone, far away from their families, scared, she didn’t know if Dave would live or die.

Stroke patients wake up to be different people, and Dave was no exception. As a way to work through her grief, nursing her husband, wondering if the man she fell in love with, her rock, would ever come back, she wrote him daily letters – to work through her grief, and to provide Dave with memories he wouldn’t remember on his own. These letters formed the basis for this book.

Allison documents her fears, her anger, her strengths, her faith. Emergency room care, rehab and all of the therapies, the amazing network of family, friends, and co-workers who stood by to help in any and all ways. This story of a man’s struggle to recover from a stroke, a woman’s faith and courage to honor her vows to love and cherish, in sickness and in health. Truly an amazing story.
